Martvili Canyon
One of the most popular tourist destinations in the country is Martvili Canyon. This is the primary destination point not only for tourists but for the locals as well. Martvili Canyon is located in one of the most historic regions of Georgia, in Samegrelo. While all of the regions have their own perks, Smagrelo is definitely famous for Martvili Canyon and the former residence of Georgian lords.Â
According to the legend, the place was one of the important parts of the Dadiani summer residence. Dadiani were the lords of Samegrelo and had huge properties within the whole region and play a huge role in Georgian history.Â
The bathing area for Dadiani was exactly at the place of the current Canyon. The whole area is surrounded by unique Colchian forests. The hiking trail, which is over 700 meters long, starts from the Visitor Center and passes the Dadiani Historic Trail.Â
The trail features 2 bridges, 3 viewing platforms and a 30-foot historic staircase built by large limestone boulders. You will also be able to see the small waterfall in the Canyon, while the walking tour and might be able to take a swim in one of the designated bathing areas.
Megrelian people are very proud of their region. They have their own spoken language as well. Samegrelo is also famous for its cuisine. It has contributed almost the most to the formation of unforgettable and irreplaceable Georgian cuisine. Make sure to try some Megrelian Khachapuri and Ghomi in Samegrelo.Â
Okatse Canyon
Okatse Canyon is another popular destination for tourists and locals. Okatse Canyon Natural Monument is 42 km away from Kutaisi, one of the oldest cities in Georgia. It also is about half an hour’s drive from Martvili Canyon. Okatse is located in the Imereti region, specifically in the Khoni municipality in the neighbourhood of the village Gorda.Â
Okatse just like Martvili Canyon features was an important part of Dadiani residency. The hiking route for Okatse passes through Dadiani historical forest park and has over 780-meter long trail. The trail ends up at the panoramic viewpoint, many people go there for bird watching tours. There is an amazing view and definitely a top destination for great photos. So first, we will let you take a selfie first.Â
Okatse Canyon will share with you amazing views of 3 cascade waterfalls, Dadiani Park and Ptsisvilo valley. The Canyon can be visited throughout the whole year, though the most active season is from late April until late October.Â
If the history of the legendary place, the promising amazing views were not enough to attract your attention, you should also know that the main highlight of the tour is the boat trip on the river in Martvili Canyon. And even more, the sky views of the Okatse canyon.Â
