Town of Mtskheta and its surrounding area have been one of the most ancient settlements on the territory of Georgia. Two kingdoms were formed on the territory of where our country is situated now in the 1st millennium B.C.: Iberia (Kartli) in the East and Colchis – in the Western part. Mtskheta used to be a political, economic and religious center of Iberia Kingdom for over 800 years. It has been a kind of a spiritual center of our country before Christ and after Christianity having been declared the state religion.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral – the main patriarchate cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox, the Mother of Georgia, the place of intrusion (entrance) of Catholicos Patriarchs of Georgia, burying many of the medieval Georgian kings, their family members and patriarchs, XI century Georgian architectural monument, one of the four From the great cathedrals (Oshki, Bagrati Cathedral, Alaverdi). Svetitskhoveli is located in Mtskheta, 20 kilometres from Tbilisi.

Uplistsikhe – a cave town, one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus and the city centre, most probably about VI century. Located on the 10th kilometre east of Gori, in Shida Kartli, on the left bank of the river Mtkvari. Nowadays it is a historical-architectural museum-preserve of Uplistsikhe. The city has streets, squares, water sewage system, four gates, a secret tunnel that leads to the river Mtkvari, fence and so on. Today he is considered as a museum in the open air.
